CORAL RESTORATION COURSE
Find out what the Roatan Marine Park is doing to help save our reefs – and you can help too!
Course information:
– 1 afternoon/2 hours of theory.
– 2 dives – 1 dive cleaning, harvesting and reporting, 1 dive outplanting.
– 3 Adventure certification: Theory and 1st dive only – Cost $200 + tax.
– Ambassador certification: Theory and both dives – Cost $250 + tax.
The theory presentation covers what is happening to our reef, the science behind it all, what our Marine Park is doing to reverse the damage, and you will learn the process of harvesting and outplanting the new coral.
There are 1 or 2 dives included in the course. The first dive you will travel with your instructor to the coral nursery where you will clean one “tree” of corals, monitor the health of those corals, and harvest pieces that are ready to be outplanted. The second dive will be directly following the first, where you will take the corals you harvested to plant onto the reef.
The outplanted corals will then be photographed and documented so the Marine Park can monitor their health and growth. Upon completing the course you will receive a certification that will allow you to volunteer with the Marine Park for weekly cleans and help with other initiatives they put together.
